Overview
What's a perfect sign may not be the same in the next spring. A patch can peel from the wall after a bad Wasatch winter, a panel can warp after a summer at 4,500 feet, and a red logo can become an old orange. Bad luck is a very rare cause. Typically, thin calendered vinyl, untreated acrylic, or raw painted steel is never designed for this climate.
High-impact street-level identity is created by our custom outdoor business signs, but the right choice of structural substrates can make the difference between a 3-year and a 30-year investment.
Utah's Climate Triad: Environmental Forces That Destroy Cheap Signage
The majority of damage occurs along the Wasatch Front and in Utah County from three forces.
High-Altitude UV Radiation & Photodegradation:
Utah is at 4000 plus elevation, which means the exposure to UV rays is greater. This additional UV exposure will cause the chemical bonds in regular plastic and pigments to be disrupted.
Thermal Shock & Freeze-Thaw Cycles:
Plastic and metal expand and contract at different rates that can often be seen as the sun sets, creating a 40° F drop in temperature within a few hours, and summer afternoons can reach over 100° F. That mismatch pops rivets and shears screws over hundreds of cycles and cracks sign faces that were fine on install day.
Wasatch Canyon Winds & Snow Load:
Winds down Weber, Parleys, and Provo canyons can reach speeds of 80 mph. Then there's the added weight of wet spring snow on top of it, particularly on horizontal elements such as the canopy frames and cabinet tops. A sign has to be designed for both, not one.
Substrate Face-Off: Structural Framing and Cabinet Materials
What else holds up a cabinet and frame is what matters, and that's where poor material selection is costliest.
Heavy-Gauge Aluminum: The Gold Standard
Exterior skins and cabinets are usually 5052 or 6061-T6 marine-grade aluminum, usually 0.063" to 0.125". It does not rust, a point that may not seem that critical to most. Orange streaks of rust can be deposited in brick, stucco, and masonry, which are extremely difficult to remove. Aluminum is also light for its strength, which is a benefit to the loading of your building wall due to wind fatigue factors. This is the benchmark when talking about outdoor sign materials for durable business signs.
Structural Steel vs. Aluminum
The job of steel remains. It's frequently required for pylon posts and deep structural skeletons. It's as easy as that: steel inside, aluminum out. All steel should be hot-dip galvanized or primed with a heavy industrial anti-corrosion paint.
High-Density Urethane and Composites
High-density urethane (HDU) is the solution if you want the appearance of carved wood, but you do not want the problems of rot, splitting, moisture absorption, or problems from insects. It carves well and retains detail. It is often recommended for monuments, sign caps, business park marking, and historic-district use where a warmer, textured appearance would better suit the applications.
Sign Face Materials: Polycarbonate vs. Acrylic
This is the classic trade-off between impact strength and optical clarity.
Polycarbonate (Lexan™) — Unbreakable Impact Defense:
It is rated to be 30 times as strong as standard acrylic and 250 times stronger than glass, so flying gravel, vandalism, and hail are not a big worry. This is a good choice for large pylon faces, roadside cabinets, and thermoformed pans. The caveat here is that it needs to be covered with a cap layer that blocks the UV.
Cast Acrylic (Plexiglas®) — Brilliant Optical Clarity:
It is the clear winner in both clarity and color. It has excellent natural UV stability and is excellent at passing colour, and will lay in the Utah sun for 10 years without yellowing. That's why it's our default preference for illuminated letter faces and push-through graphics where contrast is an important consideration at night.
We use high-impact cast acrylic faces and sealed returns on our outdoor durable channel letters to help maintain deep color in the Utah sun.
Architectural Fabrics and Metal Canopies for Weather Resistance
Fabric may be used outdoors in Utah, provided the right fabric is used on the right frame.
Marine-Grade Solution-Dyed Acrylic (Sunbrella®):
It is a method of dyeing before spinning, so that the pigment is not applied to the outside of the fibre. Hence, it is so fade-proof. A fluorocarbon water-repellent finish will prevent the cheaper canvas from developing dry rot.
Welded Aluminum Overhead Truss Framing:
A canopy needs to be able to shed wet snow without sagging or flexing the frame to let the snow pass through the canopy. A weak frame causes early breakdown of good fabric. Discover how our weather-resistant commercial awning signs combine marine-grade canvas with snow-load-certified aluminum framing for all-season entrance protection.
Protective Finishes, Drainage, and Electrical Longevity
It's the little things that make a professional job a professional job and a quick job, a quick job.
Fluoropolymer Powder Coating & Automotive Urethanes:
An electrostatic powder baking process after proper pretreatment results in a hard shell with good scratch resistance. This helps protect sign metal from road de-icing salts and airborne mineral dust during dry spells. Automotive urethane clear coats provide further protection against UV.
Engineered Internal Weep Holes & Baffles:
Illuminated cabinets build up condensation. If there's no escape, that water gets pooled, turns to ice, and starts eating away at the inside. Baffled weep holes in the lowest points allow water to flow but prevent insects, dust, and snow from blowing in.
IP67/IP68 Weatherproof LEDs & Silicone Gasketing:
Moisture-proofed power supplies use IP67- or IP68-rated LEDs and silicone or closed-cell neoprene gaskets to prevent moisture from entering. That helps reduce moisture-related shorts during sub-zero nights.
Weeping channels and weather-sealed access doors in our masonry base ground monument signage systems make winter maintenance easier.
Frequently Asked Questions About Outdoor Sign Durability
Why do so many plastic sign faces turn yellow and brittle in Utah?
High-energy UV radiation can degrade the polymer chains of cheap materials that are not UV-stabilized. Faces remain clear throughout service life using UV-inhibited polycarbonate and top-quality cast acrylics.
What is the best metal for exterior building signs along the Wasatch Front?
Heavy-gauge aluminum. It has a natural film of oxide protection, is non-corrosive, is lightweight, and will accept architectural powder coating.
How do you prevent illuminated sign cabinets from trapping moisture and freezing inside?
Install baffled weep holes in the bottom of each cabinet. The electrical enclosure is protected from condensation, as well as snow, rain, and insects.
How long should a professionally fabricated outdoor commercial sign last in Utah?
The cabinet and framing can be expected to last 20 to 30 years or more, thanks to its heavy-gauge aluminum, stainless steel fasteners, and commercial-grade finishes. The LED modules are likely to require replacement sooner, typically after 8-12 years of nightly use.
Build a Weather-Resistant Sign for Your Utah Business
It costs a lot of money to keep replacing worn-down, warped, and cracked signs. The easier solution is to use a local Utah fabricator that designs from the ground up for our mountain desert climate.
Here's how it works:
- Tell us where you are, the direction of the building, and what kind of sign you need.
- We evaluate the site (sun, wind corridors, mounting surface, etc.).
- We design stamped blueprints, design weather-resistant materials, and create a sign that will last.
